Led by Diellza Nika Hyseni and Mentor Nika · Updated 21 October 2026

The fixed costs CPR 45 Section II allows on issuing a claim, on default judgment, judgment on admission and summary judgment, on possession and on enforcement, from PD 45 Tables 2 to 7, each sum with its table. From DMD Costs, law costs draftsmen in Westhoughton, Bolton.

  • PD 45 Tables 2 to 7
  • Not fixed recoverable costs
  • Nothing leaves your browser

The fixed costs the rules allow a legal representative on issuing a claim, on judgment and on enforcement. Not fixed recoverable costs: this tool never works those out. Nothing leaves your browser.

The claim
Does the party claiming the costs have a solicitor or other legal representative?

The lookup applies CPR 45.16 to 45.23 and Practice Direction 45 Tables 2 to 7 as they stood on 21 October 2026. The court can order otherwise. It is a guide, not legal advice, and it does not work out fixed recoverable costs.

Key points

  • DMD Costs’ fixed costs lookup is a free online tool that works out the fixed costs CPR 45 Section II allows a legal representative on issuing a claim, on judgment and on enforcement, line by line with the table for each sum.
  • It is completely free, with no sign-up, and runs in your browser; nothing you enter is sent to DMD Costs.
  • Fixed commencement costs on a money claim are £50, £70, £80 or £100 depending on the amount claimed, £10 more where the claimant serves the claim form personally on a sole defendant (PD 45 Table 2).
  • On judgment a further sum is added: £22 or £30 in default of an acknowledgment of service, £25 or £35 in default of a defence, and £175 or £210 on summary judgment (PD 45 Table 3).
  • These are a legal representative’s charges, unless the court orders otherwise (CPR 45.16(1)): no VAT and no London weighting are added, and court fees are allowed on top (CPR 45.16(4)).
  • They are not fixed recoverable costs, which apply in most fast track and intermediate track claims and in the personal injury portal schemes (Part 45 Sections IV to VIII); this tool does not work those out.

How to use the fixed costs lookup

  1. Describe the claim. Say whether the party is legally represented, the kind of claim, the amount claimed and how the claim form was served.
  2. Say what happened. Choose the step: issue only, payment in time, default judgment, judgment on admission, summary judgment, or a small claims hearing.
  3. Add service and enforcement. Add any extra service under Table 6, and enforcement steps such as a charging order, a third party debt order or a writ.
  4. Read the costs. See each fixed sum with its table, the total, and the notes on what is and is not added.

Fixed commencement costs (PD 45 Table 2)

For a claim for a specified sum or for goods, by the amount claimed on the claim form (CPR 45.17). Add £15 for each further defendant the claimant personally serves at a separate address.

Amount claimedServed by the court or otherwiseServed personally by the claimant, one defendant
Over £25, up to £500£50£60
Over £500, up to £1,000£70£80
Over £1,000, up to £5,000, or goods with no value stated£80£90
Over £5,000£100£110

Fixed costs on judgment (PD 45 Table 3)

Added to the fixed commencement costs (CPR 45.19), by the amount of the judgment.

JudgmentOver £25, up to £5,000Over £5,000
Default judgment: no acknowledgment of service (CPR 12.4(1))£22.00£30.00
Default judgment: no defence (CPR 12.4(1))£25.00£35.00
Judgment on admission, payment proposal accepted (CPR 14.2(5))£40.00£55.00
Judgment on admission, court decides payment (CPR 14.2(5))£55.00£70.00
Summary judgment, or defence struck out, on application£175.00£210.00
Goods under a Consumer Credit Act regulated agreement£60.00£85.00

Possession and enforcement (Tables 4 to 7)

A possession or demotion claim carries £69.50 on issue, or £77 served personally by the claimant, and £57.25 more on an undefended rent arrears possession order or a successful demotion claim; accelerated possession, where an order is made and there is no defence, £79.50 (Tables 4 and 5). On enforcement (Table 7): a final charging order £110; a final third party debt order £98.50, or half the amount recovered under £150; a writ of control or execution £51.75; a request for a warrant of control or delivery for more than £25, £2.25; questioning before a court officer £15 for each half hour or part; and an attachment of earnings hearing £8.50 an attendance. Extra service, such as service out of the jurisdiction or by an alternative method, is in Table 6.

What these figures do not cover

Not fixed recoverable costs in fast track and intermediate track claims, nor the RTA, employers’ liability and public liability protocol costs, nor HMRC officers’ claims under Section III. Where a specified-sum claim is worth more than £10,000 and up to £100,000, the fixed recoverable costs rules also say their costs are the only costs allowed (CPR 45.44, 45.50), and no rule or case settles how they fit with Section II, especially on summary judgment. Older guides use the pre-October 2023 numbering: today’s Table 2 was Table 1, and Section II then meant road traffic accident costs.

Frequently asked questions

On a claim for a specified sum served by the court, £50 where the claim is over £25 and up to £500, £70 up to £1,000, £80 up to £5,000 and £100 over £5,000. Where the claimant serves the claim form personally on a sole defendant, add £10; for each further defendant personally served at a separate address, £15 (CPR 45.17; PD 45 Table 2). Nothing is allowed where the only claim is for £25 or less (CPR 45.16(3)).
The fixed commencement costs plus, for a judgment over £25 and up to £5,000, £22 in default of an acknowledgment of service or £25 in default of a defence; over £5,000, £30 or £35 (CPR 45.19; PD 45 Table 3). So a £3,000 claim served by the court gives £80 plus £22, £102, on default of an acknowledgment of service.
Where summary judgment is given under Part 24, or a defence is struck out under CPR 3.4(2)(a), on a party’s application: £175 for a judgment up to £5,000 and £210 above, added to the fixed commencement costs (PD 45 Table 3).
Where the defendant pays the money claimed and the fixed commencement costs within 14 days after service of the particulars of claim, the defendant is not liable for any further costs unless the court orders otherwise (CPR 45.18). In online civil money claims the defendant must pay the court fee and the fixed commencement costs on the claim form within 28 days of issue (PD 51R Section 2B).
Not under the rules. CPR 45.2 allows VAT on top of fixed costs in rule 45.8, rule 45.15A and Sections IV, VI, VII, VIII and X of Part 45, but not Section II. We know of no rule or case that adds it to these sums.
No. These sums are a legal representative’s charges (CPR 45.16(1)), so a party acting without a solicitor cannot claim them: unless the court orders otherwise, only the court fees are added (CPR 45.16(4)). No case decides the point; it is the natural reading of the rule.
£69.50 on issue where the claim form is served by the court, or £77 where the claimant serves it personally on a sole defendant (PD 45 Table 4). Where possession is ordered on a rent arrears claim the defendant has not defended (or has defended only by offering to pay the arrears), or a demotion claim succeeds, £57.25 is added (CPR 45.16(2)(d), (f); Table 5). Accelerated possession under Part 55 Section II or V, where an order is made and the defendant has not defended, carries £79.50 (CPR 45.16(2)(e); Table 5). In a defended claim, or one on other grounds, the court decides the costs.
£110 on a final charging order, and the court may also allow reasonable disbursements for search fees and registering the order; £98.50 on a final third party debt order, or one-half of the amount recovered if it is under £150 (CPR 45.23; PD 45 Table 7).
No. Fixed recoverable costs are the costs of the whole claim in most fast track and intermediate track claims and in the personal injury portal schemes (Part 45 Sections IV to VIII). Section II fixes only the costs of issuing, getting judgment and enforcing. For a specified-sum claim between £10,000 and £100,000 the rules do not say how the two fit together.
Yes. The rules apply “unless the court orders otherwise” (CPR 45.16(1)), and the court may do so, for example where enforcement is fought hard rather than being simple debt collection (Chedington Events Ltd v Brake [2024] EWHC 384 (Ch), paras 20 to 21).
