These terms apply when you use our free legal costs tools, whether on this website, through our tools API or MCP server, or through an AI assistant.

2. What These Terms Cover

  • the free calculators, form builders, look-ups and answers listed on our legal costs help page;
  • the tools API at https://www.dmdcosts.co.uk/api/tools and its description at https://www.dmdcosts.co.uk/openapi.json;
  • the MCP server at https://www.dmdcosts.co.uk/mcp, including when an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude uses it for you.

Our costs services for solicitor firms are covered by our separate Terms of Business, not by these terms.

3. Free to Use

The tools are free and need no account. We may change, suspend or withdraw any tool at any time.

4. A Guide to the Rules, Not Legal Advice

Each tool applies the rules as we understand them on the date shown on its page. A tool cannot know everything about your case: a court order, an agreement between the parties, an exception in the rules or a later change in the law may give a different answer. Check each result against the rules and any order in your case, and use your own professional judgment before relying on it.

Using the tools does not make you our client and does not create any professional relationship with us.

5. Our Responsibility to You

We take care to keep the tools accurate and up to date, but we provide them as they are, without any promise that they are complete, accurate or always available. As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from the use of, or reliance on, the tools or their results. Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law.

6. Using the API and MCP Server

You may call the tools API and the MCP server from your own software or AI assistant, without a key. Please:

  • send only the inputs a tool needs, and no names or other personal details;
  • do not try to overload or disrupt the service, or to get round its limits;
  • if you show results to other people, say they came from DMD Costs and keep the link to the tool’s page.

We may limit or block access that harms the service or its other users.

7. Your Data

How we handle data from the tools is set out in section 13.3 of our Privacy Policy. In short, the tools on this website keep what you type in your browser, and the tools API and MCP server do not store the inputs they receive.

8. Intellectual Property

The tools, their text and their code belong to DMD Costs Ltd. The court forms that the form builders fill in, and the rules and practice directions cited, are Crown copyright and are used under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

9. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed.

10. Law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
